Our school based traineeships are suited to year 11 students in high school looking to pursue a career working with Animals.
EG: Animal Attendant in Boarding kennels or cattery, Zoo’s, Animal Shelter.
This could also potentially lead to Groomers, Pet Shops or Animal Trainer or vet nursing.
Job Description
Our Animal Attendants look after our guests mostly dogs & cats and occasionally birds & guinea pigs. This includes but is not limited to feeding & exercising, cleaning kennels, play yards and cat enclosures, bathing and drying dogs, checking guests In & Out, monitoring and recording pet’s health and wellbeing, exercising and walking dogs. Animal Attendants also assist with the ground maintenance and tidying of lawns and gardens with mowing and weeding, and assist in reception with customer service and sales by answering telephones, serving customers, taking bookings for new and existing customers etc.
The Criteria for an Ideal candidate - you must be …
- An animal lover wanting to work with pets, particular dogs and cats
- Physically fit, strong and able to handle and control dogs and cats
- Not be afraid of physical work or getting their hands dirty
- Punctual, reliable and willing to work and wanting to learn
- Available to work additional shifts when required during school & public holidays - Easter & Christmas.
- Have excellent computer and communication skills
Whilst experience is not essential, growing up with animals and being fit, strong and having a genuine love of animals is!
The ideal person would…
Live nearby ideally within 10-15klms:
As a parent would need to drive you to and from work.
Have a genuine love of animals particularly dogs & cats
Proper handling of dogs and cats is a big part of the work and being able to connect with them.
And not be afraid of dogs which can jump up on you or cats that hiss at you.
Be physically fit and strong
Must be able to learn to competently handle dogs and cats including bathing and drying dogs.
Pick up and effectively clean dog kennels and yards, and cat enclosures.
Be punctual, reliable, and well organized so as to be able to complete studies and work
And be available to work some School & Public Holidays, particularly Easter & Christmas.
Trainees would normally work 1 school day per week (Approximately 7.30am-11am, 2.30pm-5pm)
Plus, extra work during peak periods: School Holidays, Easter & Christmas.
Work experience is available for applicants that best meet the criteria above to see if you are suited.
Cert 111 can normally be completed in under 2 years and trainees must complete 750hrs before end of finishing year 12. Ideally commencing at in November when studying year 10 or at the start of year 11.
